BMW M2 is coming. We have seen countless of spy photos so far, even heard BMW executives hinting at a new “baby-M” and the icing on the cake, an accidental photo on Instagram revealed BMW’s plans to launch an M2.
Today, we can see some of the best M2 spy photos to date. An M2 prototype with most of the production parts on it was spotted at the Nurburgring. The new shots reveal an aggressive front end, with large air intakes and a sporty bumper, and a rear end with some impressive flares. Earlier today, an M2 on track was spotted with shifting paddles, indicating a DCT box.
The full details around the M2 won’t be released for at least two-three months, but some of the things we heard through the grapevine mention an M3/M4 suspension, a carbon fiber roof, M side vents and carbon fiber seats. If these features end up on the production car, then the M2 with a base price of around $50,000, might be just the perfect toss-around car on the market.
BMW M2, despite having a proper M name and not just 2 Series M, is going to be very similar to the 1M. Even the recipe is quite similar to that of the 1M, the approach will be different as BMW is purpose building the M2 from scratch to be a monster. The 2 Series is already a better, more sorted sports car than the 1 Series, so it already has an advantage over the 1M. Plus, thanks to BMW’s newfound knowledge of lightweight materials and engine technology, it should be quite a bit faster. The goal for BMW is to make it lighter than the M235i (3,505 lbs with a manual).
Under the hood, we believe the F87 M2 will use an updated version of the N55 TwinPower 3.0 liter engine (N55B30T0) with 360-370 horsepower.
The BMW M2 has a production date of November, 15, 2015 with first deliveries taking place in March 2016.
Start saving money now, this will be a helluva car.
